Shareholder Activism in Belgium

Boon or curse for sustainable value creation?

Shareholder activism is already an established phenomenon in the US. In Europe, including Belgium, shareholder activism is on the rise and is expected to become more and more important. Investors increasingly voice their discontent instead of opting for the exit. This new attitude will change the dynamic between investors and boards.

Gone are the days where shareholders exclusively focused on their financial return. Today, financial objectives are complemented with the realization of ESG (environmental, social and governance) objectives. This push towards sustainability creates new battlefields between investors and boards.

Zo werd het ruime publiek warm gemaakt voor de studiedag van 9 juni 2022 over “shareholder activism”, georganiseerd door het VBO en de Jean-Pierre Blumberg Chair (Universiteit Antwerpen). Vandaag kan met gepaste trots de publicatie van het verslagboek worden aangekondigd.

Het fenomeen van aandeelhoudersactivisme (maar ook andere vormen van activisme, zoals ESG-en NGO-activisme) wordt in het verslagboek vanuit diverse invalshoeken bestudeerd. Empirisch en rechtsvergelijkend, vennootschaps-en financieel recht en procesrecht.

Het boek overstijgt ruimschoots de verwachtingen van de editors. Dat is te danken aan de onderscheiden bijdragen, die een diep inzicht bieden in de theorie en de praktijk van aandeelhoudersactivisme. Ook de achterliggende belangen worden helder in kaart gebracht. Hulde aan de auteurs.
